Slickrock Press’ objective is to align your publication with
your intent. If that is elegant, fine; if that is whimsical, great;
and if that is hard-edged or funky, let’s do it!
First and foremost
is your work itself. If you have written something that is meaningful
to you, then we can help you bring that creation to life. If your
goal is to produce a book, folio, wildly inventive “something” for
which you have a good but incomplete idea, we can help you articulate
and shape your project. Once a manuscript is completed, we will design,
desktop-publish, and arrange for its printing and binding or other
packaging.
If you have completed
your book or chapbook manuscript, you may need some or all of the
following tasks performed to prepare it for publication. Our content
editors will help you develop and shape what you have to say. Our
copyeditors and proofreaders will help you polish your manuscript
by looking at grammar, punctuation, usage and structure. Our designer
and art director will perform book design, layout, and desktop-publishing
tasks. Our project manager will work with you to define your project,
track each phase of the publishing process, ensure all work is completed
and carefully checked, and endeavor to publish your project in a timely
and efficient manner.
Slickrock Press will perform all administrative functions to get your
book to the Library of Congress and into Books-in-Print, if you choose
to do so. The book will be distribution-ready at the conclusion of
our project.
The following process describes the work Slickrock Press performs
for a book project, the most complex of our projects. However, we also
use an abbreviated form of this procedure for other types of projects
that are less complicated.
Analysis
We consult with you to determine your needs and desires for your project.
This is a guided process of open dialogue and deep listening. Slickrock
will have questions for you that will help us understand what you
want. When we have agreed on a direction, you will be given a project
plan plus a preliminary budget and timeline. This step is critical
and saves time, money, and helps ensure clear expectations. This
phase is generally brief but thorough.
Design
Work in this phase includes review and completion of your manuscript,
content editing, copyediting, and proofreading. Slickrock Press publishes
edited material only. In collaboration with you, we design the final
look and feel of your work. When this is skillfully done, it will
save time, money, frustration, and will help ensure your work is
represented exactly as you wish it to be.
Development
We will produce a prototype or mockup of your final product. This is
particularly useful when we are publishing a book. Nothing but a
mockup/prototype clarifies understanding and minimizes misinterpretation
of your vision. The mockup, with any changes, is used to produce
the final product during the final phase. Slickrock Press will assign
you an ISBN and a Library of Congress Control Number, should you
wish these. A barcode will be purchased to place on your back cover.
These three items are the basic requirements to have your book widely
distributed in most bookstores or other public venues. The Library
of Congress requires a unique ISBN, and a control number it assigns,
in order to have the publication added to its collection in Washington,
D.C.
Production
Your final document will be produced in an electronic form and you
will sign-off on its content and design. Professional printing and
binding or packaging is typically required when publishing a book.
We will get bids, help with paper selection, and manage all interactions
with the printer and bindery. After acceptance, we will provide a
copy of your book, chapbook or portfolio to the Library of Congress,
if you choose.
